Salmon
In recent years the number of Chinook salmon has increased dramatically on the Sacramento River, providing excellent fishing from mid - July through mid - January. These feisty fish are taken on salmon roe or flatfish. Their weight ranges from 12 to 56 pounds; however, the record fish taken in the Sacramento weighed 84 pounds.

Steelhead
The fall steelhead run lasts from October until the end of November. These beautiful hard-fighting fish are taken on salmon roe, glow bugs, spinners or flies. Their unique jumping abilities make them an exciting fish to catch. Their weight ranges from 4 to 12 pounds.

Native Rainbow Trout
Today, you can only catch this beautiful fish on a small section of the Sacramento River, from March until October. The coloration and the fighting strength of the native rainbow are far superior to those of hatchery trout, and they are a wonderful challenge for the passionate fisherman. These fish are taken on fish eggs, crickets, night crawlers, spinners, glow bugs or flies. Their weight ranges from 2 to 8 pounds.

Shad
This little-known fish is lots of fun to catch, because it appears in large numbers, making possible a daily bag limit of 25 fish! They are a challenge to even the most experienced angler, because their bite is very subtle and hard to detect. They also put up quite a fight. The shad run is only in the month of June. These fish are taken on little rubber worms or on flies. They weigh anywhere from 2 to 6 pounds.

Striper
This is the hardest fighting fish by a pound to pound comparison in the Sacramento River. This fish made a remarkable comeback so it’s numbers increased dramatically over the last few years. The Stripers run mainly in the months of April and May. These fish are taken on rubber worms, live minnows, lures, fresh bait like sardines, anchovies and pile worms. They weigh anywhere from 2 to 50 pounds, the minimum size is 18 inches.
